You Are the Story

Nobody wakes up one morning stuck. It gets built, one moment at a time, and most of those moments happened before you were old enough to argue with them. Week One is the night you finally turn the lights on and look at them.

You're watching the opening. The full hour plays inside the membership.

The night, in Gerard's words

Welcome to the room. Before we talk about where you're going, we have to talk about where you've been — because you are already living out a story, and you did not sit down one day and write it.

Tonight we start with six moments. Three that lifted you: the moment somebody believed you, the moment you won something, the moment you knew you had it. And three that broke something: the moment you were rejected, the moment you were embarrassed, the moment you decided it was safer to stay small.

Here's what nobody told you. It was never the moment that shaped your life. It was the meaning you attached to the moment. The facts stopped mattering a long time ago. The meaning is still running the show.

So I want you to write them down. Not think about them — write them. Three positive. Three negative. Because you cannot change what you cannot see, and you cannot rewrite a story you refuse to read.

A year from now you are going to be somebody. The only question in this room tonight is which one. Let's find out who you are becoming.

The homework that follows

Watching changes nothing. Writing changes everything. Every member does this before Week Two opens.

  • Write out the three defining moments that lifted you — what happened, who was there, how old you were.
  • Write out the three that broke something. Same detail. No editing yourself.
  • For each of the six, separate the facts from the feeling: what actually happened, and what you felt.
  • Write the meaning you attached to each one — the sentence about you that you walked away believing.

And a tutor who stays up with you

At eleven at night, when the memory you didn't expect comes back up, you don't sit with it alone. Your Story Method tutor knows Gerard's work chapter and verse, knows which week you're in, and walks you through it in your own words — any hour, as many times as you need.
